Apartment Smoke and Mirrors

Well, today I got "the letter" to post to the tenants, basically saying "pick up your trash, leash your dog, and pick up your crap", padded with "we want the place to look pretty and we'll be making improvements". We'll see how persuasive it is...

I started the beginning of this post before we went camping with Pat and Dan and our tent and their RV. I had to stop short so we could get ready, but rather than scrap that post, I'd like to continue on with it now. Camping was great, and so was my week teaching four and five-year-olds at nature camp this week. More on that later. In our business, I have not been picking up everyone else's garbage, because family comes first, then work, then the ghetto. I'll just say that the letter mentioned earlier has had minimum impact. Some, but minimal. From both sides. People should be evicted, repairs should be done, people should be responsible. But I know that my next trash cleanup will take a loooong time, and the lobby cleanups will be an obstacle course, and the cops will probably be called, sooner or later, for a drunkfest or some random neighbor(s) peeing somewhere other than in their home. We're pretty done. Done enough to think about a plan B.Like when do we decide to not worry about our next location and decide to make our farm here. I really, really want Shelby to get her manager position soon. She deserves it and it will be a catalyst for everything else. But, if it takes too long and we just can't deal with "here" anymore, and we have the money to do something about it, and I get a job in the area that we want to be...I'm just sayin'. In the meantime: cleaning, sorting, trips to Goodwill, trips to storage, prettifying the neighborhood, and supporting our dreams, egos, and sanity the best that we can. We remain optimistic, regardless of the current state of suckness, and we do so with a smile on our faces!  :S

    This place is ghetto - but it's nice to know that this ISN'T who we are...they can't bring us down to their level. It is sad to see people stuck in a rut...and I don't see an end to this cycle any time soon. The poor kids in the hood with dirty faces and no one watching, nurturing and taking care of them. No one helping them grow into amazing, well rounded adults. Sad.

I love our Christmas and New Year's break because it gives us time to celebrate, time to relax, and time to take inventory of life - the past, the present, and the future, or at least hopes and direction on what we want our future to be. I feel like this past year was a deep breath to prepare for our future home...we had our share of projects, but there is so much to do to make our home what we want it to be. Things that did happen in 2014: We bought our pellet stove and had it installed! This old house is drafty and cold, but our stove keeps our parlor and living room the warmest, and gives us a toasty place to warm up in when winter is its coldest. Got Goat Milk? :: From Mabel the Milking Goat Blog

Some people have asked about the process of milking and the reasons why we switched to goat milk. The why is easy. We want to know where our food comes from. It's easier (and cheaper) to raise a goat than a cow and you need far less space. Fresh milk, properly handled tasted just like whole cow milk and it's easier to digest. I was worried about the milk tasting too "goaty" - but it really isn't. Again, IF IT IS HANDLED PROPERLY! We did notice that if we didn't get the milk cooled quickly enough, or weren't using the milk as quickly as we should...it did take on a "goaty-like" flavor...so we take actions to counteract that. We put ice in the milk bucket, while we are milking. We clean the udders/teats both before and after milking. We strain the milk several times.
