Resolutions for 2012

Christmas was wonderful, busy, and a perfect passage into the new year. Our kids were very giving and creative (as always), and they totally deserve the gifts that they received. We spent our Christmas Eve at home, together. Tiffany arrived in the evening and is staying for a few days, and we enjoyed David's (Kait's boyfriend) company from Christmas Eve through breakfast. On Christmas day, we visited Grandma's house, then Shelby's family, and, finally, my parent's home to wrap up the night. It was a happy and exhausting day!
Now we rest and prepare for a new year. We have gone through so many changes this year and look forward to even more during 2012. One of the family gifts from us this year were two alpacas that we are scheduled to receive next month from Spruce Hill Farm. The kids are so excited, and we now have a defined start time to our livestock farm. We will put up temporary fencing until we can put up our barn in the spring, and then we will also add sheep, chickens, and goats. We will also begin beekeeping in 2012 - two hives to start us off. The garden will also be dedicated in the spring, providing us with our fruits and vegetables. Although many of our trees our planted, we will need to replace some and add more plants to our plan, especially blackberry and strawberry plants. The outside of our home is a huge part of our sustainability plan, and 2012 will be an important year for establishing our farm.
Hopefully 2012 will also bring me a career. I feel that I keep repeating myself here, with just a different time line. Being established in our new home is a huge part of my career, so we'll see where this goes. My license expires in July, so I will also need to figure out what I need to do to renew that.
Once we have our farm established, I would like for us to have a vacation - we've missed out this year, and I feel that it would be great for our family. The two places I would most like us to visit are Chittenango, New York and St. Petersburg, Florida. Our kids need to be reminded of our Florida living, as do we, since our feet last hit the sand over three years ago. Chittenango is beautiful in the summer, and we all love visiting Shelby's home town. Of course, this all depends on finances, time, and finding a good farm sitter.

What other resolutions do I make for the New Year? I'd like us to continue our goal for sustainable and green living: clothes lines, rain barrels, canning and freezing, and hopefully a wood-burning stove. I would like to be farmers by the end of the year, having the tools and clothing we need to live our life comfortably, in all kinds of weather, on our farm. I would also like to obtain personal growth: read more, master a foreign language, write my book(s), start a hobby, etc. Shelby amazes me with all that she does and learns - she never seems tired and is always absorbing new information, information that she practices and masters. I feel that I've become lazy in that respect, once I graduated. I've been using the excuse that I'm waiting on my career, but I need to get my mind and body in gear again.
This year's goals are more a list of things that will happen, along with a few things that I would like to add to the mix. I have no doubt that we will be in a very different place a year from now. I cannot predict what that place will be, only that it will be very, very different. Hopefully my blog will capture that change, and hopefully family and friends will be a huge part of that change. But most importantly, I hope for great changes in who we are, changes that will turn us into stronger, healthier, and better people in this beautiful family that we are blessed with. Happy New Year!

2011 Resolution Review

I was going to start looking at my goals for 2012, but I figured I should look at what I had planned for this year, and see how well I followed through. Or not. So, here we go:

My New Year's Resolutions for 2011:
  • Get a job! Looks like we are good staying in the SW Ohio region for Shelby's work, so we're running with that. Which means I can seek employment, preferably teaching, or something somewhat in the education field. Hmmm...I don't have a full-time job yet, but I am subbing pretty regularly until I get there. And I am actively looking. So we'll extend this into 2012.
  • Get a house!! Oh, how we've waited for this! We should be ready and able to get our family farm sometime before the kids end this school year! We're forecasting our buy using Shelby's paycheck only, but we're definitely going to need to get my career going, as well, to keep up the pace. YES! Huge accomplishment! We did not get it before last school year ended, but we did get it over the summer, and it is awesome :) Now we're planning our garden and animals for the spring, which will be in the goals set for 2012.
  • Fruits, veggies, chickens, bees, composting, recycling, and homemade food! These are a few of our favorite things that we are unable to do in this apartment, but will definitely do on our new farm. I cannot wait to plant the trees and bushes that have been living in pots for the past months waiting to stretch out their roots! We have planted most of our trees, so there's that. And we are actively composting and recycling. Fast food is not nearby, nor within delivery range (except for Ron's Pizza - a recent discovery), so we are cooking at home more often. As for the garden, animals, and bees: 2012 :)
  • Write a book. This is a leftover from last year...I have the ideas, so I just need to work on the writing and illustrating part. I did start an outline...so, there's that...Crap...2012

  • Email, phone, and visit more often. In all of our hecticness, all of the time, I have lost real-life touch with friends. I try to keep up with Facebook and my blog, but it has been to long since we've actually sat down with many of our friends. We've had visitors and our moments of success with this resolution, but not nearly enough to classify it as completed. So I'll revise for 2012 (and keep it going every year after that).
  • School. I would like to work on my Master's, preferably in Environmental Education. Of course, I have loans to worry about, so a job is first priority. Yeah, well...still working on the finding a job part, and then we'll work on more school :) Push to 2012
Not too bad. The house is the biggie, and a lot of the year has been dedicated to finding, buying, and settling into our home. Many, many expectations fill our plate for 2012, so I'll try to write that in a comprehensible, easy to read list for the New Year!

As 2011 Fades

Life is an amazing thing. You think you know where you are going, or what you want, and so you guide the reins in that direction. Yet, somehow you arrive in a totally different place. When I was divorced from my first marriage, I assumed that I might find someone some day, but that kids were probably not going to be a part of that relationship. Then I met Shelby, and my world changed drastically for the better - we have three beautiful children together, plus the fortune of having our two girls from my previous marriage in our lives as well. When we moved to Florida, we were ready to settle forever and buy a house close enough to the beach to be able to go after work whenever we wanted. And now, here we are, planning the livestock and garden of our new home in rural Ohio. Our journey would make a great book - our adventure has always been to move forward, strive to reach our goals, but to never, ever lose the fun and love in life and our family!

The difference of our life between January of this year and today is so extreme that it scares me a little. I am still not sure what the purpose of our apartment life at Hazel was, but I am sure that it had a purpose. We started the year despising where we lived, and end the year in our dream home in the country where we can sit outside and enjoy nature, life, and peace. The year has passed so quickly that I have to remind myself that it's ok that I am still trying to find that job and it is ok that we still have boxes waiting to be unpacked. Next year will prove to be just as busy, as we build our barn and fencing, get and learn how to raise our animals, work on our home projects, and hopefully begin my teaching career. Our home next year will have chickens, goats, and sheep for sure, as well as bees and maybe a couple turkeys. We will be eating from our garden and our chickens and our bees as we learn and grow, day by day. But, for now, it is a good time to reflect on just how far we have come in a year and to enjoy our family and our home in Camden, Ohio.

I want to wish all of our friends and family a wonderful, joyous, and peaceful holiday season! Thank you for being a part of our life, even when so much of our time has been consumed while getting and settling in our home. I also wish you a new year of hopes, dreams, and the adventure of life that continues to amaze us! Hold on tight - you never know what new and exciting change is around the next corner! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!

Fall Back - Seasons in the Country

Last night we turned the clocks back and gained an hour sleep, which was awesome because I have some sort of bug that is stuffing up my nose and making me cough. Not too bad - just annoying and tiring. Seasons out here are different that where we lived before. We've enjoyed watching the corn grow in the fields behind our house, and the soy beans grow in the fields across the street. The seasons are marked by planting and harvesting, newborn animals in the fields, and the bravery and friskiness of animals who are ready to mate. It's a beautiful way to watch the year pass, and it all puts the season and life in perspective a little bit. Fall festivals make a little more sense when they coincide with harvesting crops and marketing mature animal products, and Spring is even more renewing. Right now we're dying to see the corn field behind us be harvested, as have most of the other fields in the area been in the past few weeks.

Most of our trees are planted and much of our brush burned. Burning brush is new to us. we were very cautious at first, and enjoyed building a bigger fire once we became comfortable with the burn. We still have to finish off the trees and brush in the back yard, and take down the dead trees along the road in the front. We have a definite plan for our animal yard - the barn and fenced area that we want in the front yard by the field, and all the pieces that we will need to build that. We have decided to get a couple dairy goats, a couple sheep, a couple angora goats, our meat and layer chickens, and possibly an alpaca (I think Shelby has decided this already, but is waiting for the right time to let us decide). We have also picked a spot for our bees, and the gardens that will fill the back yard and different plots around the front. Our deck is decided, the septic is working, and we are working on setting up our oil delivery before winter gets too cold. Plans galore but, even better, a plan on when and how we can do all this before spring! This first year is transitional - a year of firsts and a year of making this house ours. Learning what's what and where everything is, what works and what needs work. And figuring out how our plan for sustainable will be obtained here. This first year will be BUSY, a lot of work, a lot of learning, and very rewarding as we look back on what we have next Fall!

We finally started our compost pile. Nothing fancy - no fence or anything. Just a spot to throw our leaves, food trash, and other compostable material. I am very happy to have finally made this step, because it reduces our trash quite a bit. With composting and recycling, we have been setting out trash out every two weeks instead of every week, which is a great step for us.

Shelby has ordered her/our spinning wheel, which should be here this week. This means that the fiber from our angora goats, sheep, and alpaca(?) can be harvested, washed, spun, and knitted/crocheted into clothing. Super uber excited about growing our own clothes! So, as I feel everyone should know how to do everything (maybe not master, but at least know), I plan on learning how to knit and crochet this winter. This will be good for our family and a good teaching experience for my future classroom. Drake is already dedicated to this process, and Cora is following closely. Shelby is, of course, the master.

Professionally, I have been subbing pretty heavily, mostly at Camden Elementary. I have also been applying to Miami U and other places as I see jobs that might be in my realm. Hopefully a full-time job will come soon, but I am lucky to be subbing in the meantime. I have decided to hold off on school until I get a job - it just doesn't make sense to add more debt when I am not working full-time. If time allows, I think I will start working on thematic unit planning on the topics close to me, like gardening, maps, my Florida/Ohio comparison, etc. The goal is to move forward and keep planning as I look for that job that is bound to get here eventually.

We still have a connection to Kettering, although the connection is weaker. We have friends in Dayton that we visit, we Trick-or-Treated in Kettering this year, and this weekend has been back-and-forth for blood donations, doctor appointments, overnights, and Ecova event stuff. But, we are slowly becoming more aware of local events and living that allows us to travel less. Cora and Drake's birthday parties are at our house this year, and we're having Thanksgiving here this year, also, so people are becoming familiar to the drive out here to even things up a bit. Winter is pretty likely to reduce our trips to Dayton, especially if winter is as bad as we hear it will be...

So, we're obviously busy, and have plans to keep busy for awhile. We'll see what other things life brings our way in the coming months, and what surprises winter will bring.

Timber!

Life is still at a fast pace, as always with our family of seven, but the pace is now down this road we chose instead of in circles. We have our house and we're settling in nicely. I am fortunate enough to have several substitute teacher opportunities to tide me over, and one elementary school that is close by seems to be happy enough with me to schedule me pretty regularly :)  My hopes are, of course, that subbing leads to a full-time teaching position, so the more, the merrier! I am also applying to other positions that are education related (the line is sometimes fuzzy) in case the school arena doesn't pan out. Besides my teaching, the house projects keep rolling along. Shelby is very ready to tackle the big jobs, which has resulted in several downed pine trees (eight so far, more to come), including the large one in front of the porch. Our fruit trees and other trees are in place for planting, which may be happening tomorrow if plans work out - a friend of ours may be stopping by with a digging machine to knock that whole process out (fingers crossed). There is still plenty of cutting to finish up before our yards are free of pine branches, but that will happen soon enough. Our Health Inspector should also be stopping by tomorrow to give us the scoop on our septic (bad choice of words? scoop? septic?), and then we can move ahead with the back yard plans.

The kids are doing well in school, and even Gage is adjusting. Shelby is doing great in her job, and it sounds (knock on wood) like her position is going to be around for a couple years. I am placing my Master's plans on hold for now, until I find a job. That just seems to make sense to me. I would love to go back, but after I have a job to customize my degree towards, and after I am able to bring a regular paycheck into the household.

So there we have it: my update! Fall is in the air - hence the rush to plant the trees. We need heating oil and a plan to weatherize. I am not looking forward to winter, really, but it will be much nicer here at our home in the country :)  There are plenty of indoor projects to keep us busy - we have a closet to build, which leads to a better storage room upstairs. And we have a basement to get ready for canning and planting. And we haven't even been in our attic yet - who knows what that will lead to!

I shall go for now, and get back to work at home while I have some time. This weekend is the Pork Festival, so that should give us more to write about! Bye for now!

Recycle

FYI - We are (have been) recycling again :) We do have to take it to a recycling "center", which is a recycle dumpster at IGA or by the landfill, or in Morning Sun, I think...that one is pretty vague. Anyways, I just wanted to hit on the fact that "green" is still very much a part of our plan.

Our House, Our Home

http://yourmemoriesbymandy.weebly.com/
Here we are, a relaxing Sunday morning before a relaxing Sunday day! The weekend before now has been a busy weekend of visiting with friends who dared to make the long drive out here, and back, to see us. It's weird how our apartment life seems so far behind us now - a closed door that I dare not forget but care not to open again. Since we moved in, nearly two months ago, we've been able to have family and friends over to visit and even stay overnight. Our open house brought thirty-nine people into our house, comfortably! We (I'm sure I can speak for all of us here) absolutely love having the space and the surroundings to enjoy having guests, which was not the case in our apartment. I also appreciate knowing that we have still have good ties with friends and family, even after the years that we did not see much of them because of our apartment. It is so nice to have people over, to cook outside and sit on the porch in good weather, or sit inside when we feel like it, to have a campfire and roast marshmallows, and to walk and talk, all at our home.

I would also like to say how grateful I am to all of the people who have gifted us items for our home! A grill, tool chests, Nana and Ga's bookcase, gift cards, pictures, tools, patio furniture, exercise equipment, flowers, food, dressers, a beautiful quilt wall hanging, lawn mowers, a bathroom set, scrapbooking supplies, a shed, and whatever else I forgot! So many people have been so amazingly generous to help us with our new place, and we are so very thankful for that!

School starts this week for the kids. Hopefully the kids will love their schools and I need to finish cover letters and put my resume packages together for my area school visits/job hunt. So, I guess that summer is coming to a close and fall is beginning, and our schedule will change for the school year. Lots of stuff to do inside and outside the house still, but we have time. I'm looking forward to planting our trees soon, and cutting some old brush out. We still have a busy fall ahead, and we're looking forward to all there is to prepare our farm.

We're Here! We're Here!! We're Here!!!

Oh, my goodness! So long without a post so I need to at least throw a few lines down! We did get our house, the Blue House, after a drawn-out closing that included the new septic (which we still need to get the down-low about from the Health Inspector). Or, I guess I should just say WE GOT OUR HOUSE!! We love every inch of it, from the curvy driveway to the poor back yard. We closed and moved in on June 29th and have been SO busy ever since with moving, Aullwood, life, etc. I had a great summer teaching at Aullwood's summer camp, but the drive ends up being around an hour each way, which will have to be a consideration next year. We are mostly moved in and the space is very comfortable. Our crap-ton of living went from the tightly packed apartment and flowed into the open spaces of our two-story home, garage, and yard with much relief. Like pouring a five gallon bucket of water into an empty tub. Like releasing the air from a balloon into the atmosphere. Like cutting the ropes of the Griswold family Christmas tree. There is still so much to do, but not a lot that has to be done.

Professionally, I completed to process to become a substitute teacher at Preble County ESC, which covers many school districts in Preble County. I have updated my resume and created a cover letter template. The goal is full-time, so I'll drop off resumes and apply to sub at the remaining surrounding school districts, and then focus on other full-time work while we see where the school things go. The kids are registered in school - in fact, we just talked to Gage's counselor today and went to his open house :)  Which means the summer is going fast. I'm hoping to do some stuff with the kids before the season is completely gone, and we do have to/are excited to plant our trees this fall, must figure out the heater oil supply, and must figure out septic to we can make a plan to create our back yard.

Best things about living here so far:
Lots of room to live
Lots of outdoor space
Surrounding farms
Our new grill and, therefor, cooking out!
Our own campfires

I must close for now, but there will definitely be more to come. This is the new beginning we were waiting for, and the starting point for the rest of our life. Such a positive place in life to be, with plenty of undiscovered opportunities. Finally, life begins here at Marxwell's House and Fresh Eggs Farm!

Teacher

I've gone through so many papers tonight - ideas, worksheets, and themes that I've used and collected over the past five years. It's been a great look backwards at the experiences I've had in this process towards becoming a teacher. I SO need a classroom of my own and need to get this party started!Looking forward to watching my teaching develop and grow with my career, hoping for that opportunity at a school soon!

And They're Off!

My back is achin' after a very busy day yesterday! We packed, packed, and then packed some more! Mostly in the bedrooms - Shelby and I played keep or toss and cleared off the over-stuffed shelves in our bedroom and closet...then we took down the shelves. The kids, all of them, started packing their stuff and put a pretty healthy dent in that process. We worked pretty much all day, made a trip to KFC (drive through) for an 8pm dinner, and managed to finish up for chillin' at around 10pm. Then Shelby kicked my booty at Skip-Bo (again) before we collapsed in bed for the night. Hopefully Grandma won't check her garage/our storage for a little bit...at least until we can tell her that it will be out by ______ :)  Gotta do it all over again today, this time in the dining room (shelves), pantry, and hopefully, closets. Then I'll start on my Aullwood teaching prep tomorrow. It's gonna be a busy week, and a busy summer (hopefully). I think we can, I think we can, I think we can...

Welcome Summertime!

Summer break is finally here! At least for the kids, that is...they are out of school, but things are (hopefully) ramping up for our move! As it stands: the appraisal was performed last Wednesday and we should hear the results early next week. If that went well, we're looking at moving on the week of the 20th :)  If it did not go well, then we're delayed. That would be bad. We're now to the point where we have to move forward with the moving process in order to be ready in time to move. We've started packing, and Kait gave her notice at work in to transfer to Richmond July 1. Tiff has decided to move in with a friend in order to stay in Dayton - not sure that I agree this is the best for her, but she feels that it is and I hope that it is. We canceled the paper and will be canceling cable, so that we can be sure they both definitely stop before we leave this apartment. Most of our potted trees and bushes are doing great, but a few did not make it through the winter. I wanted to wait awhile to give them a fair shake, but I was finally convinced they were done and dumped those pots. Oh, and we also dumped our compost bins so their new owners can take them home. Lots of moving projects in the works so that we can be prepared when our moving time comes!

May was a busy month, of course. We were unable to go to COSI, and our Dragons game was rained out, but we stayed busy nonetheless. I was able to sub quite a few days at Greenmont, which was awesome! I can't wait to get my own classroom, but the next best thing is to be able to walk through the halls of a school and have the kids recognize you and say "Hi, Mr. Roberts!". I have applied at a couple more schools recently, but we'll chat about those when and if they turn into anything. We were able to chaperon Cora's class field trip to Boonshoft and to the zoo (Cincinnati) - both great days! My next big project will be to get ready for Aullwood's summer programs - six weeks of teaching for me, outdoors, even! Over the summer I'll continue to update my resume, seek and apply for teaching positions, and hopefully come up with something by fall.
So far this month, the kids have spent lots of times with their friends, including some overnights. We're definitely looking forward to having friends over to the Blue House - it will keep our little ones connected to their friends and hopefully be a great experience for their friends to be in the country. Drake and I went to his Dragons MVP field day yesterday. He was able to play some games, eat some food, and get autographs during this warm and sunny event. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed being able to spend this time with him. Yesterday we went to the Fairhaven Antique Fair. It was not as exciting as we thought it would be - more of an antiques yard sale for the block. But it was nice to walk our new neighborhood and meet some of the people. We finished that visit off with ice cream and pie at Fairhaven Community Church - very nice place, and nice people. Today we will stay home. Today we pack, tomorrow I start getting back into my Aullwood planning, and we pack. Then we pack some more. It's gonna be a busy summer!
This is such an exciting time! Past all of the planning, stress, and preparing, we are working to get to the home we've wanted for so long! OUR house, our home, our garden, our sustainable well and septic, our orchard, our Fresh Eggs Farm - our corner of the world to grow our family. It's a garage to build and work on things, a yard to grow and play in, and porches to hang out and grill on. It's also a new life adventure. It's only an hour away, but it is a new place to be - our universe will shift an hour west :) Life will begin again - not that it ever stopped, but it will be renewed. This is our fork in the road, and we're ready to go!

April Showers Bring May Showers

April was a very busy month...time to catch up without being too wordy :) I've enjoyed subbing at Greenmont several times in the past few weeks. So far I've taught kindergarten, first, and second grades in this role, and I really have enjoyed them all! Next week I will sub in Cora's class - that should be fun! And I have an interview with Oakwood for a music teacher position on Thursday. That should be interesting, and good practice. I've also kept busy throughout the month with free webinars and classes, as often as I can get them when I'm available. It's a great way to stay in the game and keep my brain in teacher mode. Montgomery County Solid Waste had an awesome Population Connection class with plenty of teacher materials, for free! I am big on community resources, and we are lucky to have so many in this area! Other highlights this month: Grandma's 96th at Aunt Barbara's house, visited Shelby's old roommate Le while he was in town, went through a round of dentist appointments, and finally made it to a Roberts family breakfast! We also attended a Dragon's game (thanks to MVP Drake!) and Marvin Garden's Think Green event, which was fun, informative, and productive, as we walked away with two Pawpaw trees and some reusable sandwich wraps, and, finally, a print version of Urban Farm Magazine (yay!)! The month ended with a short trip to Pittsburgh to drop off the hand-crank generator, Kait's birthday dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse, and Shelby's delicious chocolate souffle for Kait's birthday dessert! Grandma's flooding cellar has been the headache of the month, with the water getting high enough to knock out the pilot light, twice. A-Atherton was by this morning to estimate a sump pump. $1500...not sure if Grandma is going to go for that.

Our home-buying quest is still going. We are trying to get those last few points of our (when I say "our", I mean "Shelby's") credit up a hair more. Our lender is working so well with us, and we've been providing additional paperwork to try to keep things rolling...fingers crossed. It all seems like a LOST moment - waiting for the right door to open. Will it be the house? A new program? A different, never-thought-of twist of destiny? Who knows - stay tuned! It's close though - I can feel it.
The Priory Hotel in Pittsburgh
May is here, and the calendar is pretty full already. Another Dragon's game, a trip to Duquesne (this trip with Annie, also, who is working out nicely, thank you very much!), and a commitment to a COSI trip with the kids are just a few things we have planned for the month ahead. I have a month to prepare for Aullwood classes and to get ready for summer - cannot believe how fast time flies!
Off to get things done - hope to be writing sooner next time!

Spring is Here!

Shelby's Crocus
Spring is finally here, officially! Yay! SOOOO glad I can say "winter is over", at least as far as the calendar goes :) Life is becoming busier as Shelby's home shows and our school events come into season. I subbed for Greenmont on Friday, which was good for me and so nice for my teaching ego. Hopefully it was as good for the teacher - I'll have to follow up and make sure I'm making the impression that I want at this school. Shelby and I took the kids to Greenmont's Family Fun Day yesterday, and they roamed the school well enough on their own while Shelby and I worked the bounce house. And we won a night at Magic Castle from the raffle that we invested in! Afterwards, we, and a couple of the kids' friends, enjoyed our first root beer stand meal of the season - Mmmm! The warmth of the season has hit often enough to allow the trees to bud and the crocuses to bloom. All of these things seem to brighten the place, and our spirits, a bit.
We took a trip to Twin Creeks Metro Park last night to view the perigee moon. It was a fun trip and a great view of this closest moon of twenty years. I love when we can do things like this for our family and hope that the kids grow to treasure these moments as much as Shelby and I do.
Cora's picture displayed at Dot's Market
Next week will be busy - good busy. I have a meeting with Nicole about my Aullwood summer job! I forgot to mention that I will be working my kindergarten and second grade camps, AND a few weeks of the preschool camp! This will be a great experience for me, and I'm very excited about it. There is a Greenmont PD on Wednesday that I was invited to attend! I will also be working COSI on Wheels at Greenmont on Thursday - another fun event - and will be going to Aullwood with Mr. Fultz's class on Friday. The Bellefontaine Home Show is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This is one of my favorites, although it is a drive. Hopefully Shelby's new Field Coordinator will be cleared and start this week, also, which will make next weekend, and life for Shelby, easier. Like I said, life is gearing up for spring!
The peppers are going to do well this year!
I guess that's it for now. Time to plan a trip to check out some houses and neighborhoods Have a great spring, everyone!

Hey - Where'd I go?

So, I realized that it has been nearly two months since my last written post, which is not what I wanted from this blog. I get busy, or frustrated, or blah, and the blog settles to the bottom of my list. So here I am to bring things back up to speed and to catch up. First of all, we're still here. So there's that. We remain a family of seven, dreaming and creating our life together, and supporting each other through the frustrating times. We are all lucky in that respect.
Shelby has finally received her promotion and is getting paid the appropriate salary for that jump! She is so awesome and has deserved the title and paycheck for so long - we're all so proud of her, especially me! It looks like Annie will be her Field Coordinator once she gets through the admin process, which will be a great help. So we pretty much have the green light for the Dayton area (unless fate changes that), and also Indiana, which Shelby will also allegedly have both hands in. We're looking at homes in Preble County and areas surrounding that county. On weekends, we go for drives checking out homes, going to open houses, and dreaming of our home. We're ready. SO ready. But, alas, our credit score is not. We have been working to catch up on bills, both present and (most) past, worked on our savings, and we do what our lender instructs. Our score has improved a lot...but we still have nine points to hit our mark. SO close. I'm excited. We're excited! But, at the same time, it is a bit frustrating. Every day that we are in our apartment is a day that we feel failed. The trees are beginning to bud, the days are getting warmer, and we wish that we were experiencing these days on our farm. We feel trapped here in the clutches of this dismal apartment, and long to start our garden, plant our trees, and raise our chickens. I know that the opportunity will come, and we try to remain positive, but some days we just feel beat. Since the day we decided to move back to Ohio, we have felt such a strong presence of fate/destiny guiding us towards wherever we are going. We trust that hand - I know that it is guiding us somewhere important, but it is hard to have the drive and to be working so diligently to race through the dark toward a door that hasn't opened yet. We will get there, I'm sure. In the meantime, though, we get through, day by day, enjoying our successes and dreaming of the future.
I am subbing for Kettering schools now, and will be teaching my third class on Friday. There are many substitute teachers in Kettering schools, so the jobs are few and far between. I am lucky enough to know a wonderful principal who believes in me and has created opportunities for me to not only sub in her school, but to grow with her teachers during professional development. For that, I am also grateful. I have visited Kemp School, and will be attending a field trip to Aullwood with my previous CT and friend. In addition to all that, I have been talking to my Aullwood people and have confirmation that I will be working my same two camps this summer, and possibly a toddler program. Yay! I worked and attended the WSU Education Fair recently, handed out a couple handfuls of resumes, and was able to participate in a couple interviews. The teacher market is not good right now, which is the opposite of predictions when I started my degree program to become a teacher. I trudge through and hope for the best. I am hunting harder now, but will save my hard-core job searching for after we get our house and know where we land. There are places I would love to work and definitely be willing to travel further for, such as Kettering, Aullwood, and Kemp. And there are places that I think that we will end up near. But it is hard to know just what is in store for us. Hurry up and wait.
So, that's where we're at. So much further but still not quite there. Window shopping for houses and a teaching career, just waiting for the right doors to open. Full speed forward, but not sure what, or where, the destination is. That's life, right? Hopefully we'll be blogging about bigger and better things soon. In the meantime, I'll try to keep things going and post them more regularly :)

Coming Home From School

A mid-winter thaw :)

And Breathe...

It's a warmer day in the middle of January, after a long weekend which we stayed busy looking at houses/areas, attending a birthday party, and visiting with friends. The snow is nearly melted with the slow and steady rain, but we're expecting colder temperatures and some minor snow later. We'll enjoy the grass while we can! Shelby is at a meeting and the kids are not home quite yet, so I'll try to post some thoughts. We went looking at houses on Saturday - houses that we saw on the internet and decided to check out in real life. We're not ready enough to look inside these homes, but wanted a sense of the areas these homes are in and the actual condition of these homes behind their strategic photos. We discovered a beautiful part of the state out west in Camden and all the way down to Oxford. We drove by an awesome home in College Corner! A bit above our price range, but a beautiful home in a beautiful setting - what a great town! We had lunch in Oxford at a place called 45 east, thanks to a tip from a guy we passed by. Oxford (at least the area we visited) is very college, very friendly, and very nice. I especially like the hills and wooded areas that we drove through on both sides of the state line, and I'm finding it harder to look at homes on flat parcels cut from Ohio's corn fields. We ended our house visiting at Huber Heights, of all places, to show the kids the abandoned five-bedroom home Shelby and I visited earlier in the week. We drove up to find that someone had broken into the house which, after the "all clear" from the police officer, gave us the opportunity to see the inside. While this property isn't really rural, it is on a couple acres in a more secluded part of Huber, and very much within our budget. All in all, the day gave us a better idea of the kind of home we want, and the area that we would like it to be located. We're getting closer day by day.

College Corner $173,500

Huber Heights $69,900

Shelby's career is going well - a smooth transition from last year's program to this year's program, much better than last year. We're working forward on paying down bills and beefing up Shelby's credit, since she has the job right now. I'm beginning to look more seriously at working, although we still don't know where we'll be living, exactly, so that part is hard. It is nice that the year has quieted a bit and we can breathe a little bit for now. Here's looking to an adventurous year, and the help of life to place us in the right spot to live out our dreams. There's a big year ahead of us - lots of unknowns and lots of trust in the hands of destiny.

Kids are nearly home :) Time to get ready for the rest of the day!

Almost Snow Day

Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.5

We received a lot of snow today, just a little to late for a snow day off of school! This is me picking up the kids from school :)
